About Eric.
Over 25 years ago, Eric Hehman was given an opportunity as an unpaid intern @ Austin Asset to connect with an experienced founder in 1997. Austin Asset grew from $25 million in assets under management (AUM) to $350 million in their first ten years together. The needs of the business expanded in a material manner during that time and planning for the succession of the founder became their focus. The founder retired after a seven-year succession plan with a team of three successors leading the firm to $625 million in AUM. As of March 2023, the firm oversees over $1.3 billion in AUM.
In 2014, with the succession plan completed, Eric experienced a newfound tension for the relationship of founders and successors. The concept of being a conduit took form. How could he hold on to what he knew and who he knew when so many other firms were struggling with succession planning. Just over a year after completing the founder’s succession plan, Eric co-authored Success and Succession to examine the leadership transition process from the successor’s point of view, and outline the considerations and strategies that lead to a better future for the business.
